Why is the Direction of a Floor important?

Natural light, plays a big role.

The direction of a floor/ floor-design can have a tremendous impact on the visual appeal of a room.

Generally, when deciding on what direction you want your floor planks to be installed, it is based on personal preference. If you are someone that has a bit of an obsession with straight lines, like I do, you will want the direction of the floor to run from your front door, down the hall (it just adds so much…)

However, the direction of a floor has an impact on the feeling and visual appeal of a room or space, but does not influence the quality or performance there-of.

From a traditional design point, a floor is usually installed according to the natural light entering a room. Even though this plays a big role and can look amazing with the early morning sunlight gently touching the soft warm wood floor, it is not always the best guide.

Perfect harmony.

For instance, if you have a narrow entryway or limited space, the natural light will not be spread evenly.  If this is the case, you would need to make use of a different aspect of the room- the entryway or floor-design.

With the wide variety of designs available, a floor can also be installed in a diagonal direction. Which can add an interesting element to the space.

Another possible option is making use of the most frequently used entrance of a room or space to guide you on the direction of the planks. By doing so, this method can make the room appear larger or wider than the actual size.

Natural light can highlight specific areas or features of the flooring…
